Stakeholder perceptions towards sustainable shrimp aquaculture in Vietnam

Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production industry globally and considered to have greatest potential meet demand for seafood being a solution overfishing. Despite benefits of aquaculture, rapid growth intensification (so-called conventional aquaculture) has raised concerns about safety, fish welfare, environmental social issues stemming from tragedy commons. These need be addressed enable sustainable aquaculture development. While negative impacts been evaluated using physical chemical indicators, acceptance not fully when evaluating sustainability. With this backdrop, our study investigates knowledge beliefs towards shrimp development among two key stakeholder groups in Vietnam: public producers (shrimp farmers). Our results show that stakeholders were concerned although different emphasized aspects. The believed biodiversity loss overuse antibiotics pesticides more problematic compared producers, who water quality disease outbreaks main problems facing industry. Following on this, most respondents perceived positively, implying acceptability its Awareness positively significantly affected stakeholders’ support expansion, suggesting communication education may effective tools improving aquaculture.
